Montessori Update

by Heather

Before I disappeared for a few months, I wrote about Lennox starting Montessori school. Well, almost 3 months into it – she seems to love it, as do we! We have already seen a lot of changes and the things she knows how to do. It may be a coincidence that she knows how to do these things because of age, or maybe its the school — I guess I have nothing to compare it to! For now, lets assume the place we are giving our money too is helping out ;-)

Lennox seems so much more like a little person than a little baby/toddler. She wants to do things for herself and she does NOT like if you don’t let her try first! Most tasks, she will end up asking for help in the end…”help peas, help peas”. Lately, putting on her socks “sucK” (we need to work on that one!), shoes “schhhhoooes” — this is a daily activity that she likes to do on her own now.

She also has a thing about taking her jacket off right as she gets home – nothing bad about that — well if you have yours on too still, she will let you know and pull it off of you! Bossy little thing she is!

So other than wanting to try dressing/undressing herself, shoes, etc… she is eating at the kitchen table now rather than her highchair. We haven’t used it in weeks — i guess its time to fold it up and put it away! She can’t eat anything (even finger food) without asking for her fork.. you can use your imagination as to what that must sound like when she says it…another one to work on!! She would rather a cup than a sippy cup. She also is talking more and more in sentences. The best ones lately have been, “Mommy, have a seat”, “Daddy are you in the shower?” and “Daisy is outside”.

Lennox loves to clean up too — if she spills, she looks for a towel to wipe it up, if there is trash, she wants to put it in the trashcan, if there is laundry, she puts it in the hamper, etc.

So really what I am saying is, Lennox is getting way to big, way too fast!! She seems really happy when I bring her to school in the morning and she is happily working, playing or doing crafts when I pick her up in the afternoon. The best pick up afternoons are when she sees me, yells my name, grabs my hand and drags me over to what she is working on to show me. Just too darn cute I tell ya!!

Here is all her cuteness in her little uniform too:

Anyone else have experience with Montessori? So far, we are really happy with the decision we made!

Paging Dr. Lennox

by Heather

Saturday morning, after Kyle went to work (sad face), Lennox and I headed down to Fort Worth to the History and Science museum — Inside they have the children’s museum. We brought her here when she was about 8 months old , she loved it back then — so I figured she would love it now.

We met up with her “old” friends Devyn & Brooklyn. I wonder if its possible for a 1 1/2 year old to have old friends? Old as in, past not age! They are both from her previous daycare. Brooklyn’s mom was the one who took care of Lennox from 3 months old until about 17months old! Needless to say, I think she liked seeing her again — Lennox said her name a lot the rest of the day!

The museum is really great for the little ones! She was able to have a lot of adventures with her friends…

… she was a grocery shopper:

Get out of my way, i'm ready to shop!

Shopping fool!

… she was a doctor:

Lennox loved taking care of the newborns

… she was an ambulance driver:

Watch out! There is an Emergency!

… and she found the little tyke computers (of course)

Either Lennox is really small, or this computer is REALLY big!

Overall, it was a great Saturday morning! I ended up becoming a member at the museum so that we can bring her back all the time! This will be especially nice if our summer is 100*+ all the time!

Here is a cute re-take of a picture from last year – look at the difference!

So, where are some fun places that you bring little ones to explore?

Be Mine! Happy Valentine’s Day!

by Heather

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! We hope you have a great day with your sweetheart! Here is our little valentine….

Today at her school they are having a little “friendship day” party. She was given the task of making one special valentine to bring into class and she will exchange with one person. Here are a few pictures of her making her valentine:

We don’t do much for valentine’s day, but we do have a little valentine for Lennox :) Looking forward to giving that to her tomorrow afternoon!

Does anyone have any big plans for valentine’s day? We sure don’t! Have fun in whatever you do! HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

PS – Look how little she was this time last year! Valentine’s Day 2011

We have a 17 Month Old!

by Heather

What is going on in Lennox’s world?

Words: She is saying so much — she is none stop gibber jabber… some of her most used words that are different from our last update are: No – She says no to the most random things, so she doesn’t seem to really understand the word, but she says it! She says BABY all the time, to us and her toys/baby doll. Bye, Hi, Wawa, All done, Uh oh so sad, Elmo (She LOVES elmo more than anything in the world right now it seems), Pizza although I think she is meaning People.
Favorite toys: She loves her Elmo phone, Baby Minnie with Blanket that we got her in Florida and her baby doll. She still loves her cozy coupe. She has a fisher price piano that she loves to play with and her ball popper.
What makes her laugh: Lots but always tickles, swirling around in a circle, dancing, funny faces and peek a boo. She usually will laugh if you make a goofy grin at her too.
Clothing size: 18 months, some 24 month/2T.
Shoe size: 4/5 still – she has small feet which makes it difficult!
Favorite Foods: Mac & Cheese, Banana, Goldfish, Strawberries, Tomato, Cheese – these havent changed much actually. She will eat about anything though.
Favorite Drink: Milk, Water, some juice. She thinks soda is funny too.
Number of Teeth: We went from 8 on our last update to 11 now. She has 8 front teeth and 3 molars.
Milestones: We are in the beginning stages of potty training although we pretty much have NO idea what we are doing! She picked out a potty at BuyBuyBaby — elmo of course. We put her on it from time to time, but she hasn’t gone yet. She tells us when she has to go poopoo, but she never goes in the potty – usually about 10 minutes later. Apparently with Montessori school, they learn fast, so i’m hoping thats the case. I’m ready to be done with diapers! Hmm.. What else, she is pretty much running everywhere now, talking a ton, she got the dreaded daycare virus, hand foot mouth — that was fun, even mommy got it!

She is as silly as can be. Her hair is getting so long, so now she shakes her head from side to side to feel her hair flying all over the place – she will go on and on until she gets too dizzy. Here is a cute video of that:

The Daycare Hunt

by Heather

As some of you may or may not have heard, we unexpectedly lost our child care situation :( . So with this news, as upsetting as it was, we had to begin the daycare hunt for Lennox again. We never really had done any looking around since we knew we wanted her to go to the home daycare that she was in. This also meant, we had no idea where to even start! So we canvased the area, I must have gone to over 20 daycares this past week. Tours, Information, Tuition Prices Galore! We found that private preschools and daycares pretty much cost exactly the same. We decided that a school atmosphere would be better for lennox. If i’m going to pay this much everyweek, she mine as well be learning more than just playing and being babysat. We came to the final conclusion to put her into a Montessori school not far from our home. I hadn’t really considered Montessori in the past, but my nephew will be starting at one in January and my college roommate is a Montessori teacher, so I had been hearing lots about it and the benefits.

After checking out the school near us, we both knew this was the best place for Lennox. The facility is brand new, super clean, calm, almost serene. Its so different than a big daycare center, but I think that Lennox will learn a lot while being there and she will be in a good mix of age groups. Her class is 18months to 3 years, rather than just being grouped with all the 18-24month olds. Lennox LOVES being with big kids, so I know she’ll eat that right up!

We went back with her on Friday so she could meet her teachers and new classmates. At first all she wanted to do was the works stations, which was not what everyone else was doing but after a bit she got the hang of it. She put her toys back herself, she cleaned up her snack herself, she washed her hands herself; it was all pretty neat to watch. She will be going back for a bit on Monday and Tuesday and then starting for real the Monday after Thanksgiving. I think she is going to do really well there and if what everyone tells us is true, she will really start being able to do a lot more things for herself and become part of the little community.

Before we start, we have a list of things to get her, which includes her uniform clothes. It’s really hard to find uniforms for toddlers, especially this time of year. If it was summer, it would be much easier! After searching and searching, we finally found a local consignment store that also carried new school uniforms. Although they didn’t have a huge selection in 2T, we were able to get 5 outfits, so she at least has 1 for each day right now! She is going to look super cute in her uniform – thats for sure!

I’ll make sure to take some pictures and post them after her first day at school :) Anyone else have experience with Montessori schooling?
